Events can have a surprisingly negative impact on the environment, but that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, your event can be a catalyst for encouraging attendees to help the environment!

Even small steps you take to make your event cleaner and greener will quickly add up to make a big difference. Here are ten ideas to make your event more eco-friendly:

  • Provide attendees with digital versions of the event itinerary, maps, registration materials, and everything you would normally print. They’ll be able to access everything on their phone or tablet, and you’ll greatly reduce the amount of paper used.

  • Encourage speakers to use electronic presentation formats like video and PowerPoint. If printed handouts are necessary, print on both sides of the paper.

  • Make sure recycling bins and trash cans are easy to find throughout the venue. Encourage your guests to recycle everything they can and compost any leftover food.

  • Opt for reusable linens and dinnerware, including cloth napkins. If you need to serve food on the go, use plant-based biodegradable containers instead of polystyrene.

  • Serve locally-sourced food. This not only helps farmers in your area but also cuts down on the distance the food travels, resulting in lower carbon emissions.

  • Serve meals buffet-style instead of pre-plated to reduce the amount of food waste. If you have extra food following your event, donate it to local charities and shelters.

  • Consider hosting your event outdoors. Instead of needing to use indoor lighting powered by electricity, use the sun to light your event.

  • Search for venues that use energy-efficient LED lighting. Plus, choose a room with an abundance of windows so you can use sunlight to brighten up the space.

  • Use clean energy sources like solar or wind power to power your event. You may want to look for venues with solar panels on the roof! Avoid using portable generators fueled by gas or diesel – a common sight at outdoor events.

  • Encourage eco-friendly travel options like carpooling, walking, and public transportation. You could also book a shuttle bus to bring your guests to the venue, cutting down on emissions from individual cars.
